KIRKIN' O THE TARTAN SERVICE

Kirkin O' The TartanAfter England conquered Scotland in the 18th Century, the Scots were forbidden to belong to clans, to wear kilts, to even play bagpipts, under punishment of law. These religious symbols went underground and became a metaphor for love of family and church.

When the Scots went to “kirk” (church), they concealed pieces of their tartans under their clothing. At an appointed time, known only by the clergy and the congregation, the families, their tartans, and the Christian values they represented, were “kirked” (blessed) in secret.

In 1941 Dr. Peter Marshall brought this ceremony to his church in Washington, DC. Since then, this celebration has been commemorated in many churches throughout the US and Canada. All are invited to this unique, colorful and reverent ceremony.

Market Street Presbyterian Church was abuzz on October 24, 2010 during the 11:00 service. Colorful tartans, bagpipes and drums herald the blessing of all the families present. Those of Scottish descent were encouraged to wear their tartans to show their rededication to family and strong Christian values during the roll call of the clans. All present were blessed when Clan Dei was called, as we are all included in the Family of God.

Authentic Scottish treats were served during the
Fellowship Hour after the service.
