Fifty years ago, in 1952 the sign at the corner of Market and Cole Streets read, "The New Market Street
Presbyterian Church." Construction of the new church would not be completed until the following year. At the
dedication, then pastor Arthur Romig orte: "A new and beautiful house of worship has been built. Its
foundations rest firmly upon the earth but its spire points upward to the skies. It is built so that the light
of God may shine through its clear windows into the hearts of worshipers; and, conversely, that reflecting God's
light, man's faith and good works might shine into the community ... Just as our forebears established, by the
grace of God, a Presbyterian church in Lima one hundred and twenty years ago, so we today, as their followers in
this procession, are grateful that we can contribute a building to those that come after us."
Half a century later, what Dr. Romig and his congregation built has come down to us as a legacy to be cared for and
kept ready for those that will come after us. The "new" Market Street church is now in regular need of renewal.
During the past year the Buildings and Grounds Committee has considered and studied big projects, like much needed
air conditioning. And we have accomplished numerous small projects like new carpet in the church secretary's office.
Maintenance and upkeep in a building of this size is ongoing and under constant review. We appreciate the work and
dedication of our Master Maintenance custodial staff, Norm Lever and Karen Cave. About 60% of the building budget
goes to pay for utilities and custodial needs. The remaining 40% pays for everything from snow removal to plumbing
problems to lawn care and painting. The work is ongoing and not always visible. Much that is done simply "maintains"
the building. You'll only notice those things when we don't do them! One big project this past year was the
installation of new tile and lights in the downstairs Sunday School halls.
